This coffee is from a private washing station in the West Arsi zone of the Oromia Region. The cherries delivered here are grown by smallholder farmers in the Nensebo Woreda and the Kebele, Bulega. Coffee in West Arsi grows on green highland hills with steep slopes bordering the natural forest area and the Betena River.
The communal wetmill in Bulega - Nensebo is owned by Israel Degfa. The wetmill collects and buys cherries from various smallholders. Israel, a second generation coffee producer, puts a lot of time and effort into increased quality and better preparation at his washing stations. We recently started to work with him both as an exporter and a producer. Israel supports local social projects such as funding local orphanages. This lot is Grade 1, meaning the producers have put a lot of effort into the selection during processing. We selected this coffee for its delicate and well balanced profile.
Some hundreds smallholder farmers delivering tiny amounts of cherries daily to the wet miller. On average farmers are have a farm size of less than 1 hectares. Most coffees are organic by default. Organic compost is common, pruning less common.
