The Kiri processing plant was built in 1997 in the central province of Kirinyaga in Njukiini district south of Mount Kenya. In the vicinity of the Kiri plant, ie in the adjacent villages Gitumbi, Kirunyuini, Kerere a Kaboia, there are about 1200 farmers who process their coffee cherries here. The coffee is harvested in two production seasons, with the first harvest from May to June and the second from November to December. The main varieties of coffee grown are SL 28, 34 and Ruiru 11. Coffee trees in this area grow at an altitude of about 1450 meters above sea level. Due to its volcanic origin, the soil is very rich in nutrients. Rich rainfall and favorable temperatures, which range from 13 ° C to 25 ° C, also contribute to the high yields of coffee trees.

In line with the growing awareness of the need to save the environment at the station, local farmers have decided to build infiltration tanks for wastewater from coffee processing,which returns most of the water to nature.
